Accountability From A 17th Century Perspective
“It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.” ~~ Moliere
The 17th century French playwright and actor put his finger right on it. There are two kinds of obligations and duties: those we must do and those we must avoid.
We are surrounded by incompetence and negligence in every arena, both private and public.
And astonishingly, they all expect to get paid!
“No one goes there any more, it’s too crowded”
So said the great American philosopher Yogi Berra. (He was also a helluva baseball player.)
Today Seth Godin uses this somewhat brilliant observation to make a crucial point about what marketers (or any of us) need to do: don’t interpret what’s observed into what you want to see. Enjoy it.
“No one goes there any more, it’s too crowded”
It’s also true that most of your friends have more friends than you do.
The law of large groups is at work here. This explains why the people you see at the gym tend to be in better shape than you are.
People with lots of friends are more likely to be friends with you than people with no friends, right? And the people who are at the gym a lot (as in the people you see the most often) tend to be in better shape because they show up more often.
Discernment is the hardest part of marketing–seeing the world as it is, instead of how you experience it.

The MLM Placebo
Seth Godin’s latest post http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2011/09/everyone-gets-their-own-belief.html begins:
“The placebo effect isn’t a lie. In fact, if you believe something is going to help you get better, it may very well do just that.
This very same effect works with stereo equipment, wine, politicians… just about everything where our belief intersects with reality.
You can believe that Ford is better than Chevy, that California reds are better than French ones and that your particular tribe is right (and that everyone else is wrong.)”
So too can you believe that your Network Marketing company is the greatest, the best, the most generous, the marketer of the most desired products, etc.
Yet what happens when belief collides with fact? With demonstrable proof?
Marketers, Godin writes, love the placebo effect because it opens the possible use of stories, fables and constructed perception to sell more than is visible: price and features.
You and I were sold an MLM opportunity by a marketer. Chances are extremely high that we were sold – and we bought – a story, a fable, a myth and a constructed perception.
How’s that working out for you? Has any of it collided yet with demonstrable fact?
What to do about global warming is an issue we all have an opinion on. Fair enough. But Godin asks, should we, the uninitiated in science, be asked to determine whether global warming exists or not? Does the weather care what we believe?
When you joined your MLM there was a definite, almost measurable, amount of belief as part of your decision process. But how much of your need for verifiable proof was suspended? And is there now some collision with “scientific” real world empirical fact?
Do the economy and the company care what you believe? We’re all entitled to our ‘placebo effect’ beliefs, but as Godin asks, are we entitled to our own science?

Best Quote To Build Your MLM Business?
Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter says:
I go to as many trainings as I can. Why?
I hear great stuff, pick up new ideas, and rethink old strategies. I feel sorry for people who think they know it all in this business. If they know that much already, think of how much more they could earn with even more knowledge.
Anyway, in August 1995, I heard Dayle Maloney give a talk and he described how his early days were a bit of a disaster. His first check was less than $6. That’s not very good in anybody’s opinion.
Now, if someone asked you the question, “How much money did you earn your first month?” and you had to answer, “Only $6.” — that could be hazardous to your recruiting!
Well, Dayle has an answer for almost everything.
When somebody asks Dayle, “How much money did you earn your first month?” – this is what he says:
“I don’t know. I haven’t finished collecting it all yet. You see, you get paid residual income in this business. I’m still earning money from my efforts from my very first month!”
Awesome answer. Not only do you overcome a prospect’s objection, you also slip in a neat selling point about the residual income feature of network marketing.
Has that quote paid off?
Yes! And I don’t know how much it has paid off since I’m still getting paid for the first time I used it.

Obedience Has Its Limits
Here’s a blog post from Seth Godin on obedience and self-control.
Confusing obedience with self-control
It’s an expensive confusion.
We organize our schools around obedience. Tests, comportment, the very structure of the day is about training young people to follow instructions.
We organize our companies around obedience as well. From the resume we use to hire to the training programs to the annual budgets, revenue targets and reviews we create, the model employee is someone who does what he’s told.
And the rationale for this appears to be that at some point, obedience transforms into self-control. That at some point, people start obeying themselves and become leaders. Self-control is without a doubt one of the building blocks of success, a key element of any career worth talking about. We need self-control if we’re going to make a difference.
But help me understand why obedience is the way to get there? Compliant sergeants rarely become great generals.

My take? Obedience is for dogs. Besides, it is the enemy of Creativity.
Remembering With Respect
I feel very fortunate to have been born and raised in New York City. It is a very special place that stirs strong passions for me personally, not all of them always so good!
But I grew up living in and with what today is know as multiculturalism. Only we didn’t have that word then. It was just New York and it was just another neighborhood with people who were a little bit different from us. That’s what made them so interesting. And the city so great.
I remeber my grandfather telling us he invited one of his fellow laborers from the work site to share dinner. His co-worker was an American Indian (that’s what he was called back in the ’30s.)
Only in New York.
In tribute to this magnificent monstrosity of a city, I would like to share Seth Godin’s blog post for today: It’s Different Here.
Enjoy it.

Building Wealth With Network Marketing
To have health is to be or live healed. To have wealth is to be or live well.
Doug Casey is a man who knows a thing or two about wealth and he was recently quoted in Dr. Steve Sjuggerud’s newsletter DailyWealth Premium.
There are some radical thoughts there but as Doug writes, “these ideas weren’t radical 200 years ago… But they are considered radical now. That’s why it’s important to keep them in mind. In the financial crisis I see coming, the right ideas might mean your life.”
From that newsletter I would like to share some points from both Doug and Steve.
First Doug:
1. “First, recognize that wealth is a high moral good.
Don’t feel guilty about having it or about wanting more. I do believe that productive people – people who work hard to provide goods and services for others – definitely tend to be wealthier than unproductive people. They deserve to be. And since we don’t live in a malevolent universe, people generally get what they deserve. So, yes, wealth is definitely one indicator of moral excellence.”
2. “Second, figure out your purpose in having money.
Sure, money makes life easier. And it’s nice how it enables you to assist people you like with material things. But I strongly suggest that you not take too short a view on this matter.”
3. Steve Sjuggerud enumerates Doug’s 3-step plan to building wealth. As the focus of this blog is wealth and Network Marketing, please pay special attention to these three steps and see if what I have boldfaced below doesn’t make the case for Network Marketing.
“Step 1: Liquidate. Chances are high that you have too much “stuff.” That stuff is costing you money in storage cost, in depreciation and in the weight of psychological baggage. It’s weighing you down. Get rid of it.
“Step 2: Consolidate. Take stock of your assets. After Step 1, that should be a lot easier.
“Your main asset is knowledge, skills and connections you possess. Take stock of them. What do you know? What can you do? Whom do you know? Make lists and think about these things, with an eye to maximizing their value.
“Step3 is the most important… the ability to create. Working for yourself is the easiest way to create.
“Think like an entrepreneur at all times. Remember that there is an infinite desire for goods and services on the part of the 6 billion other people on the planet. Find out how you can give them what they want, and the money will roll in.”

Is FREE A Sign It’s Worthless? Seth Says Not Necessarily So
Today’s blog post by Seth Godin – http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2011/09/do-it-tomorrow.html – sarcastically suggests “There are very few categories where there is less correlation between price and quality than advice.”
I say sarcastically because Seth asks if we are more likely to take action on advice that we have paid dearly for, or said in other words, less likely to act upon free advice.
This is a very insightful question which challenges each of us to consider whether we are confusing price with value. (“Does expensive advice feel more valuable than the free stuff?”)
Personally the best business advice I ever received, the information that not only changed my business life but showed me how to own my life, was FREE.
So to paraphrase Seth one last time, Are you less likely to take action because you got it for free?
Here’s a test: Your FREE report is available right here. It is the same one I mentioned above.
Go ahead. It’s invaluable to your career.

Today’s Honesty – Tomorrow’s Fortune
The economy stinks. No one seems willing to do what must be done. And you aren’t happy waiting for someone else to answer your problems – as if they ever will.
Honestly, the time to get hold of the situation is now and with the right information, the right opportunity and the right group of people you can.
There is a way. There ALWAYS is. But you already know that. It takes belief in yourself and in your ability to find the help and those people you can trust yourself to find.
It also takes a complete system from A to Z. And that’s available too. In this free report.
Trust yourself. Take Action.
