  • MLM & QALY

    Okay, we all know that MLM = Multi-Level Marketing but how about QALY?

    Thanks to President Obama, and now more recently Chief Justice Roberts, we Americans will have to become very familiar with this new acronym.

    The quality-adjusted life years measurement (the ‘QALY’) is a standardized measurement used in publicly funded healthcare systems, such as in Great Britain, to determine how modern medical care will be doled out. Here’s a quote from the url:  http://www.nice.org.uk/newsroom/features/measuringeffectivenessandcosteffectivenesstheqaly.jsp

     “With the rapid advances in modern medicine, most people accept that no publicly funded healthcare system . . . can possibly pay for every new medical treatment which becomes available. The enormous costs involved mean that choices have to be made.

     “It makes sense to focus on treatments that improve the quality and/or length of someone’s life and, at the same time, are an effective use of . . . resources.

     “To ensure our judgements are fair, we use a standard and internationally recognised method . . .  the quality-adjusted life years measurement (the ‘QALY’).”

     Allow me to translate.

     If you are 80 years old and need a hip replacement a calculation will be made to determine the number of quality years you have left. When it is determined that number is too low, you very likely may be denied the resources, which may go to a 30 year old determined to have more quality years left. That will not make you happy.

     But what if that 30 year old is an illegal immigrant?

     This is the New World that Obama and Roberts have created. Perhaps if Pelosi and the others had read the bill before voting on it, and if it had been called a tax, the vote might have come out differently. But that did not happen and we are now faced with a two-tier system: the wealthy will be able to get any and all healthcare they need and the rest of us will all be in the same boat, scratching for what resources the “experts” have and have calculated we deserve based on how many years of “quality life” we have left. ~ “Sorry you 80 year old, no hip replacement for you. You’ll have to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair.”

     Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi was funny, Obama’s healthcare Nazis will not be.

     I do not like to present a problem without suggesting a solution. So what to do?

    1.  Stay healthy. Stop eating garbage that some are trying to pass off as food.
    2. Get off the couch and MOVE. Your body is designed to MOVE. Forego the wheelchair and flip the healthcare Nazis the bird.
    3. Take supplements. Even the better food may be nutritionally deficient.
    4. Become as wealthy as you can. Get past any mental barriers about that.
    5. Consider network marketing or MLM. It is as simple as what you have been doing since you were five years old but you haven’t been getting paid for it. It is time you changed that. • In MLM? Gotta Bad First Sentence? You’re DEAD!

    As soon as you open your mouth, you are making an impression – Good or Bad. (Maybe that’s why so many reps are reluctant to go out there and work it.)

    But that first sentence sets up all the rest of your conversaation so if you’re turning people off, try this from ‘Big Al’:

    OMG, How I Love the Internet!

    I mean there I was just a few hours ago unaware of an entire blog and a group of outstanding and outrageous people. By way of an email I discovered Adam Baker and his most impressive and inspiring site:

    ManVsDebt.com where I also found a video of  him speaking at a TED event. His topic? Asking this enormously important and timely question:

    What does Freedom mean to you?

    I can’t recommend it highly enough so here it is. Don’t delay, check this out now:

    MLM Tip: How To Speak, How To Listen 4

    If you’ve been doing network marketing for even just one month, you’ve probably heard this one:

    “So how much money have you made doing this?”

    And for most of us it can be a real stopper. It certainly stopped me once or twice.

    Here’s Big Al with Art Jonak giving us a really masterful answer to this thorny question:

  • Like Too Many MLMers, Zynga Gets Zinged

    In a blog post, Paying For Virtual Pigs, published on January 5th, I wrote that Zynga’s online game FarmVille, where users run a virtual farming business, very closely resembles many badly constructed MLM companies.

    Well, Zynga is in the news again and the news is very bad. And once again the parallel to bad MLM is clear.

    Here are the highlights:

    • Zynga users are ditching the company — and the stock is getting killed as a result.
    • Daily activity on Zynga’s social games fell 8.2% in May, following a 12% decline in April.
    • Zynga shares fell more than 10% Tuesday, June 12th, to close at $4.98, while just three months ago, shares were at nearly $14.

     Zynga’s games are free to play, but Zynga makes money when users plunk down real dollars to buy in-game items, such as farming equipment.  That’s not real farming equipment, that’s virtual, online, visualized, make-believe farming equipment.

     As I wrote before, the parallel is clear: there are REAL businesses and VIRTUAL businesses. The tragedy is that too many “business” owners can’t tell the difference, online or off, in the conventional world as well as the home-based one. Too many innocent and uniformed people are paying REAL money for VIRTUAL pigs, in FarmVille and in too many bad MLM companies.

     Looking for a home-based business? Look before you leap into a pile, virtual or real, of MLM manure.

    First, find out how you have been doing network marketing since you were a kid only you’ve never gotten the paycheck. Read this free classic eBook to see what it is all about and how to finally collect the check. And check and the video to the right.

    “MLM? Isn’t that one of those Pyramids?”

    Have you heard something like that when finally you were able to approach someone about your business opportunity? Have your downline members heard the same?

     What if you were to say something like this in response to your downline complaining about it:

     “Oh, that happens to all of us at one time or another. But let me suggest this if I may.

     “Have you ever asked yourself if what you said caused that question and objection to be raised?

     “And what would happen if you knew what to say to prospects? And instead of hearing something like that, you heard, “Really? Tell me more” as they leaned forward.

     “You would be in a world of joy instead of a house of pain, wouldn’t you?”

     When we stop to think about it, it all comes down to knowing what to say or, in the words of Big Al, being able to speak commercially. Big Al is fond of saying that in 30 seconds on TV or the radio, advertisers and marketers are able to speak directly to our subconscious minds where all the decisions are being made.

     Do you know how to do that?

     Can you speak commercially and to your prospect’s subconscious mind in order to get a decision, in order to keep your business and life moving forward regardless of that decision?

     You can get a taste of what it means to speak commercially, as well as the skills themselves, on a free webinar series that’s offered each Saturday at 1pm ET. It costs nothing to attend and you can register here

    PS: If you’re curious about what MLM is all about or realize that you’ve been doing it all your life, every day, but just haven’t collected the checks for it, read more about it in Big Al’s classic Are You Walking Past a Fortune?

    9 Reasons Why MLM STILL Appeals To Millions

    In a blog article I recently read the author, J.P. Hicks, was consoling those who are experiencing the humiliation of being unemployed and the frustration of looking for a job in the current dismal economic environment.

    He related a story of his cousin who has a $180K college education, is working part-time in a department store and has sent out over a two year span 38,000 resumes, all to no avail.

    Insightfully, he stated that society has “trained us to believe we are worthless without a job” and that “no one ever tells us to stop looking for a job and get busy building something”.

    Not true.

    Over my years in Network Marketing I have heard exactly that advice repeatedly. Hicks lists 10 reasons why ‘JOB’ should be a curse in our collective vocabulary and that we should shun all attempts at seeking one. Out of the ten reasons, nine could precisely describe the motivation for the millions who join the NM industry. Mind you, the author was not endorsing Network Marketing.

    Here are those nine reasons that very accurately define why MLM still appeals to millions and most likely will for a great long time:
    1. Working a job makes others wealthy, but not YOU. Self-explanatory.

    2 Jobs are designed to make you poorer. Because wages do not keep pace with rising costs. In MLM you are paid according to what your efforts produce.

    3. Jobs force you to get up at the same time every day: One of the goals of many Network Marketers is simply to sleep until they are finished and then get up.

    4. Most jobs require you to wear a costume of some kind  Wish I knew how many MLMers brag about going to the “office” in their pajamas!

    5. Bosses wield the all  power. This one hit home for me because I have never met a boss I ever liked!

    6. Jobs tax your income at the highest rate. If you’ve never heard about the tax breaks for owning your own business, talk to your accountant. And if you don’t have one, find one because you’ll need one and will be able to afford one once the ball gets rolling.

    7. Jobs steal your passion from you and deny you of  what you really want to do with your life. Another one of the greatest motivations for a vast majority of MLMers.

    8 You’ll never be in control of your life working for someone else: If someone has the power to end your way of life, then you will never be free. Who can’t get jacked up and enthused about owning their own life?

    9. Most jobs hold back your potential as a human being: Ah, this one explains all that personal development that is so intimately connected to Network Marketing. What other business or industry allows you to get to the heart of the matter for yourself and touch and mentor others to grab hold of their own life course?

    Many thanks to:

  • MLM Tip: “I Don’t Want To Crush My Propsect”

    This week I received a phone call from a member of my downline, a truly nice young man whose biggest stumbling block in building his business may be his shyness.

    He was happy to report that he had increased his prospecting activities, engaging more people in conversation by using the skills promoted by one of the masters, Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter.

    Then my team member said something that was so out of character, the conversation had to make a detour.

    He said, “I’ve been asking people that question more and more but I haven’t crushed anyone with my business presentation yet.”

    “Wait a second there. Did you hear what you just said?”

    “What?”

    “You said you didn’t want to crush anyone with your opportunity. I know you’re proud to be a network marketer and that you’re equally proud of our company, so why do you think you would be crushing someone?”

    There was silence. And I knew in that silence there was an awakening occurring.

    “P., your word selection reveals how you think and feel about yourself, your business and what you believe you are doing to your prospect. You realize that, don’t you? Instead of crushing them, how about sharing with them? Can you appreciate not only the difference in the two words but more importantly how it reflects what you are thinking and feeling?”

    ”Oh my God, yes.”

    “Doesn’t this help explain your reluctance to talk with others? I mean, I know you don’t want to hurt anyone so if you believe you’d be crushing them then you wouldn’t be eager to engage them. But sharing at the appropriate time is so much more – more helpful, friendly, connecting, constructive and productive.”

    It is a common misbelief that we must be aggressive in our efforts to prospect and sponsor. I know because I went through it myself for years. And it stems from a misconception that in conducting business we must be rough and ready.

    We don’t. And if most of us certainly don’t want to hurt anyone but believe we may be crushing those we speak to, is it any wonder we shy away from interaction?

    Lesson: get the skills, listen well and believe you are benefitting those you are sharing with. Some will volunteer, some won’t, so what. No damage done.

    How To Speak, How To Listen 3

    Mortimer Adler argues in his 30-year-old masterpiece How to Speak How to Listen that being able to listen well is the most difficult communication skill to acquire, more difficult to learn than speaking or the other skills pair of reading and writing. This difficulty helps to explain why it is the most lacking of the communication skills.

    But why is that and what does it tell us about our human behavior?

    My hunch is because listening is linked with its sister skill – speaking, and the emotion that stirs ups in the majority of people. You probably know that when asked, most people say, even more than dying, their greatest fear speaking in public .

    When most of us are in some kind of conversation or presentation – let’s say we’re talking to a prospect for our business opportunity – we tend to get so wrapped up in what to say next that we FORGET to listen. And when that happens we fail to connect. We in effect isolate ourselves, widening the gap that already exists naturally and the one we are trying to bridge by speaking to them to begin with!

    Is there any wonder so many of us Network Marketers have such difficulty sponsoring people into our businesses?

    Want to do something about it?

    ~~~~~~
    While I enthusiastically recommend Mr. Adler’s book How to Speak How to Listen , he does use a lot of examples from the classical world making the book rather academic. If you are a network marketer or in conventional sales, looking to improve your commercial speaking and listening skills you can’t do any better than Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter. You can find a list of his 25 Essential Skills for Network Marketers at http://BigAlSkills.com and sign up for his newsletter at http://FortuneNow.com at no cost.
    Why Looking For Good Prospects Is Useless
    – UNLESS you Know What To Say
    From Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter’s most recent newsletter:
    If you have talked to all of your friends, and they tell you “No,” … and if you have talked to all of your relatives, and they told you they were not interested … finding new prospects to ruin isn’t the answer.
    You don’t need new people to ruin.
    You need to change what you say.
    If your best prospects (family and friends) hated what you said, then strangers won’t like what you say any better.
    * Buying 1,000 names of new prospects to ruin isn’t the answer.
    * Joining 20 networking clubs isn’t the answer.
    * Running ads isn’t the answer.
    * Working harder isn’t the answer.
    The answer is you have to learn what to say.
