  • MLM Tip From Big Al: “How Would You Feel?”

    A few days ago I offered a very short story by Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter, the story of two young men. Here’s another one a bit longer that asks the question, “How would you feel if you weren’t told?”

    The Social Security Story

    Imagine you and I are both 85 years old. One day I come up to you and I say:

    “Hey, did you get your Social Security check yet?”

    And you say:

    “Huh?”

    So I repeat the question and say:

    “Did you get your Social Security check in the mail this month?”

    You frown and say:

    “Social Security check? What’s that?”

    I explain:

    “You know about the Social Security check, don’t you? It’s the check the government gives you every month just for being old. Once you turn 65 years old, you fill out a little form and the Government sends you a check every month just for being old.”

    You say:

    “Oh no! I didn’t know about it. And here I am, 85 years old, and for the last 20 years I could have been getting all that extra money. I just missed out on 240 checks of free money from the government!”

    So how would you feel if that happened to you? Pretty bad. No one told you that you could have been getting those checks.

    And how would you feel if I said this?

    “Oh, I’m sorry. I knew about these checks all the time. I guess I just never bothered to tell you about them over the last 20 years. I thought maybe you wouldn’t be interested in getting that free money from the government.”

    You would be mad! Really mad!

    That is why we must tell everyone we know that we do network marketing everyday but we just don’t get paid for it. They don’t know this, and they don’t know how to collect the check.

    Then, if they are interested in picking up that extra check, they can ask us for details.

    We don’t want one of our friends to come back to us five years, 10 years or 20 years later and say,

    “Why didn’t you tell me that I was already doing network marketing every day, but that I just wasn’t getting paid for it? What kind of a friend are you to withhold that kind of information? I could have been getting extra paychecks every month!”

  • MLM Tip from ‘Big Al’: Getting Your Prospect Engaged

    Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter offers a very simple and very short story you can use to easily get your prospects engaged in conversation and their imaginations going. Here it is:

    The Short Story Of Two Young Men

    There are two boys who are best friends. They grow up together. They go to school together. They grow up and become young men, and they both get good jobs in the same town.

    One young man earns his regular salary. The other young man earns his regular salary, but once a month he gets a $1,000 extra check from his normal recommendation of things he likes.

    Which young man gets ahead financially?

    * * *

    Well, this story should at least open up the conversation. You might end up talking with your prospect about how one young man is a better saver. Or maybe you’ll end up talking about how one young man gets an extra monthly check.

    The story captures the imagination and interest of your prospect. It is the best way to communicate.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Each one of us has a story. In my eBook available only on Kindle I share six stories of network marketers who declared their desire for success but who unknowingly co-operated with their own undoing. You might want to check it out. http://Why98percentFail.com
    Lack of MLM Skills Is Only Part of the Problem
    Those who have been mentored by Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter know that people fail in MLM because they lack the necessary skills. But I believe that’s only the beginning.
    What if a network marketer buys and studies all the CDs and books and attends all the seminars and workshops –in other words, has all the skills – but still struggles and fails because THE SKILLS ARE NOT PUT TO USE.
    Doesn’t that beg the question that there must be more going on than lack of skills?
    Don’t we have to ask WHY that network marketer is not using the skills?
    And what’s gotten into his mind that’s distracted him or confused and deterred her?
    The percentage of network marketers who ARE making their goals won’t give this much thought unless they first have downline members who fit this description of struggle and second, care about those struggling.
    The percentage of network marketers who are making their goals ARE most likely using the required skills and so are making Big Al’s point.
    Unfortunately the vast majority in MLM is not and so is struggling and thus contributing to the common perception that MLM doesn’t work – to say the most harmless thing about it.
    That’s why I wrote my book. I took six stories of six different people that I had a series of phone conversations with over the course of several weeks. They each swore they wanted to succeed but allowed outside people, forces and ideas to derail them. In the book I told their stories and then suggested what those ideas and forces might be and why so many, some say as high as 98%, fail.
    I wrote this book to shed some light on a problem that is largely self-imposed and so is largely self-correctable, provided the will is there.
  • Do You Keep Your Appointments The Way You Keep Your Word?
    That may be a problem. It was for Michelle.
    In my recent book I relate the story of this bright young woman who called to break an evening telephone appointment. No problem – except it was the third time she had done it in about ten days. So I asked what was up and she told me she knew when she made it she would not be able to keep it.
    Here’s an excerpt from the book:
    “I really knew I wasn’t going to be able to keep the appointment.”
    “Really, I see. Then why did you make the appointment?”
    There was no answer, so I continued.
    “Do you think there is one singular thing that if changed would impact the world for the better, way beyond our imagination? Even one simple solution?”
    She said she didn’t think there was. I suggested the following:
    “The reason there is so much turmoil in the world, so much contention right here in our country between political parties, so much anger from the populace – and why you are struggling in your business – is because people don’t keep their word. It is that simple.
    “If members of Congress and parliaments around the world kept to their sworn duties, if presidents and prime ministers kept their promises, if business leaders and employees kept to their agreements, how different would the world be right now? How different would it all be if husbands and wives, mothers and fathers and children just did what they said they would do and not promise to do something if they knew they never would or could?”
    She didn’t say a word. I had her attention so I finished.
    “Michelle, no matter how hard you work, no matter what skills I may be able to help you acquire, no matter how great your company is, and no matter how wonderful your products and services are, if you don’t keep your word you won’t find the success you so deeply desire. It is THAT simple.”
    ~~~~~~

    There are lots of reasons why so many do not succeed in MLM. This is just one of them.

    The trouble is that a majority of those we deal with are like this, saying one thing and doing another. Yet we dream, we strive and we are relentless in pursuit of our destination.

    There is more to the story and five more similar to the one you just read, all from and about people who swear they want to make it but somehow find something gets in their way.

    You will also find some speculation on why it is getting harder and harder to recruit and keep a downline populated. I couldn’t resist. Call me a sucker for trying to figure out human behavior but that is our business to a large degree, isn’t it?

    If you’d like to learn more you can go to http://Why98percentFail.com

    My book is not the usual take on MLM. I did not write about compensation plans, about recruiting or about personal development. There are plenty of good books, CDs and videos available on those key subjects.

    My intent was twofold: to explore why earnest individuals such as Michelle get so sidetracked and to ease our frustrations as business builders.

    I hope you enjoy the book and ask you to leave a comment when you are finished reading it.

    To Our Success!

  • Are Your Prospects & Downline in a Fog? Bill O’Reilly Speculates They Are – and Then Endorses My Book!

    Well, sort of. LOL

    Polls show that a vast number of Americans do not appreciate the economic trouble we are in and so, on his show this evening the news commentator asked the question: “Are American Voters in a Fog?”

    Here are the highlights of his argument:

    • Hi Tech dominates our lives.
    • We’re addicted to video games, texting and surfing the web.
    • All this allows us to block out the world whenever we want.
    • It’s now possible to live in an alternate universe operated out of any device of your choice, most often now from the palm of your hand.

     “Our society has been dramatically impacted by hi tech and it’s influencing the presidential race . . .”

     . . . and I say it’s impacting your Network Marketing business too – and not for the better.

     How? When you go looking for customers for your business’s products and services, or prospects to convert into business partners, you’re fishing in the same pond where all these distracted folks are. You’re competing for their attention which is being conditioned down to last only seconds at a time.

     If the vast majority (70% by the polls’ reckoning) are more interested in an alternate reality, that leaves fewer who read and can string one thought to another.

    Too harsh? I don’t think so. And I say so in my book by using the real life stories of six people I coached and making much the same argument as the argumentative O’Reilly – the vast majority of the population is severely distracted.

    And you think this has no impact on your business?

    You can find out more about my book at http://Why98percentFail.com

     And happy prospecting!

    Why 98% Fail or No Success Without Failure

    I know, I know! That’s focusing on the negative, like saying the “Glass is Half-Empty!”

    Well, it is. It has to be in order for the Glass to be Half-Full, doesn’t it?

    Let’s be honest. When you look at that Glass, it’s BOTH Half-Empty AND Half-Full AT THE SAME TIME.

    All the conventional advice is for us to focus on Success, on the part of the Glass with the liquid. And when we do that we are choosing to ignore the empty half.

    But it is still there  – the empty half I mean.

    There can be no Full without Empty, just as there is no Success without Failure.

    Besides, that’s where we learn.

    You remember the story of Edison and his 10,000 ‘failures’. Only he didn’t call them that. He claimed he learned 10,000 ways the light bulb wouldn’t work!

    So yes, looking at failure works. It teaches. In our case it teaches what NOT to do with our Network Marketing businesses.

    If you’re up to it and want to learn what NOT to do, you may want to check out my new book available only at Amazon via the Kindle store. If you don’t have a Kindle reader, don’t worry. You can get the free reader app download for any of your devices here.

    And you can get your copy of the book via http://Why98PercentFail.com.

    Thanks.

    To Your Success!

    PS: Oh, the book’s subtitle is Why Recruiting & Keeping Your Downline Populated Keep Getting Harder. Aren’t you curious?

  • Damned By Dualities

    If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present. ~ Lao Tzu

    Pay attention to the language you hear coming out of the Democratic National Convention this week. Take note of how many times you hear any of the speakers talk about the Great Depression and how much greater this depression is than that one was. Also pay attention to any analysts who will use the words nostalgia  and nostalgic more than usual.

    You’ll hear them talk about how they can bring the country back from the depths and once in a while you’ll hear some of them wax romantically about FDR rescuing the country from it and how this current president can do – is doing – the same but how all the former Republican administrations spending put us where we are now.

    Now I know the Republican National Convention ended last week but if you can recall – or even Google – some of the speeches, you will discover that we heard language that does not evoke depression but anxiety and fear for the future.

    The language of the Republicans doesn’t describe depths but falling from heights, especially ‘going off the cliff’. Their party has been energized by the Tea Partiers, a group focused solely on fiscal responsibility despite all the political charges tossed at them by the Dems. Clearly the Tea Party is anxious about the future in terms of the fiscal health of the country.

    The Repubs know a good line of attack when they see one so they go after Dem spending because “it threatens the future of our children and the country” they are fond of saying.

    Their only reference to the past is a comparison of today with four years ago. (Remember that was originally Reagan’s question.)

    The Democratic obsession over the past is also evident in how incapable they are of dealing with the future. I mean $500 million flushed on the failed company Solyndra, deigned to provide us energy for the future – evidence of no foresight.

    The Republican anxiety about the future encourages them to disregard the past. Evidence: the neo-con wars begun in Bush 43’s terms, especially in Afghanistan, a country not subdued by either the British in the 19th century or the Russians in the 1980s.

    As in any paradox built on only two points of view or two options, both camps are somewhat right – and somewhat wrong – at the same time.

    And that’s why there’s no real difference in many of the proposed solutions of either of the two parties. We’re either going to have a Democratic government with nostalgic solutions like buying good ol’ General Motors, that is, spending, or a Republican government cutting taxes on the rich, the ‘job creators’, who usually don’t do that except for those in India, the Philippines, etc..

    We’ve seen BOTH these movies and they are BOTH reruns.

    I am suggesting that the Democrats are no longer the party of the donkey but the party of the Grasshopper; the Republicans are no longer symbolized by an elephant but by Ants.

    Don’t know the reference? This may jog your memory. They are the main characters in one of Aesop’s most well-known fables The Grasshopper and the Ants.

    (I just reread it and was struck by the image of soldier ants toiling for the colony.)

    If you are sick and tired of the same old rhetoric, it is time for you to reclaim your mind and repair the rift of all dualities create.

    I have just published a book on Kindle Direct Publishing available only online. You can purchase it and read it on your Kindle or reader with a free download of Kindle for any device.

    And please don’t be fooled – this book is not about Network Marketing exclusively, but about how we have collectively lost our minds to external distractions peddled to us as culture & politics disguised as entertainment.

  • Rich or Poor, According to Rohn

    “The philosophy of the rich versus the poor is this:
    The rich invest their money and spend what’s left;
    the poor spend their money and invest what’s left.”

    The Essence Of Creativity – “What box?”

    On Friday I had the occasion to visit my local community board where I was asked to sign in on one of those lined sheets with columns and lines for Name, Address, Phone, email Address, Reason for Visiting.

    So I did so but, whether I write large or the lines and spaces are too small, I used more than what the designer of this form allotted.

    When I handed it back to the woman she wrinkled her nose and mumbled something about “taking up more than one line.”

    My reply: “You really were taught well, weren’t you?” and when she looked at me a little bit defensively I countered, “I mean, I’m sure you were told not to color outside the lines, weren’t you? But the essence of creativity is to use whatever you need – space, lines, time – to get done what you set out to get done.”

    Perhaps too big an answer to a rather insignificant issue but her reply was a peek into a way of thinking that has crept into our lives and is crippling us.

    We have become SO sensitive, SO worried about offending, SO paralyzed by whatever is considered “correct” this season that nothing is getting done. We’re not working, not earning, not building, not creating.

    Worse. We’re sliding backward into an abyss.

    You have, I’m sure, heard the plea to think outside the box.

    The best reply I’ve heard to this is,

    “What box?”
