The Value of an Elevator Pitch

Being in marketing of any sort you have no doubt heard of an Elevator Pitch. But what exactly is its purpose? As Seth Godin tells us below no one shops in an elevator.

No one ever bought anything in an elevator

The purpose of an elevator pitch isn’t to close the sale.

The goal isn’t even to give a short, accurate, Wikipedia-standard description of you or your project.

And the idea of using vacuous, vague words to craft a bland mission statement is dumb.

No, the purpose of an elevator pitch is to describe a situation or solution so compelling that the person you’re with wants to hear more even after the elevator ride is over.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Now an even better question: Can you deliver an effective description of what you offer, compelling enough to have people ask for more information?
If not, you can learn to . . . and for free too! Just go to http://MLMreadysetgo.info
There you’ll be able to register for a free series of webinars that presents the skills that will enable you to deliver a message that will have your listener asking for more.
And it is all based on the marketing skills of another master, Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter.
Now because of the holiday break the LIVE webinars are on a short hiatus but will resume after the New Year. But you can listen to the previous few months’ of archived recorded sessions.
All yours and all free. Just use my name, Tony Lauria, as your inviter. (FYI, this is not an affiliate program.)
MLM Tip: Just What is Network Marketing?
Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter fills us in:
When people first hear the words “network marketing” or “MLM” – the first question in their minds is, “What do you mean?”
Network marketing is simply:
“Recommending and promoting what you like.”
That’s it.
Everyone already does network marketing.
We all recommend and promote things to our friends and acquaintances. This is part of the human experience. We naturally want to share our favorite resources, products, music and ideas.
Here is a quick example.
You see an ad in the paper for a new restaurant opening. You go, have a great meal, and then you tell your friends how wonderful the food was.
That was network marketing.
Now, the restaurant owner appreciated all of your word-of-mouth advertising. He would like to reward you, but he has already spent his entire marketing budget on advertising. So, when you return to his restaurant, he gives you a bottle of wine with your next meal as a “thank you” for bringing more customers to his restaurant.
Yes, we recommend movies, books, baby sitters, dentists, cars and more. We all do network marketing every day, however … some people actually get paid for it.
Want to get paid for what you are already doing?
Consider this. Many companies believe that the word-of-mouth recommendation and promotion of their products and services is more effective than money spent on advertising. Here is what they do.
They stop their traditional advertising and marketing.
These companies then use these unspent advertising and marketing monies to reward people who recommend and promote their products and services.
So if you like the products and services of one of these companies, don’t change what you are doing. Simply continue recommending and promoting, and let these companies send you cash every month.
There are two types of people in the world:
  • Those that recommend and promote the things they like, and
  • Those that get paid for it.
Building Wealth With Network Marketing
To have health is to be or live healed. To have wealth is to be or live well.
Doug Casey is a man who knows a thing or two about wealth and he was recently quoted in Dr. Steve Sjuggerud’s newsletter DailyWealth Premium.
There are some radical thoughts there but as Doug writes, “these ideas weren’t radical 200 years ago… But they are considered radical now. That’s why it’s important to keep them in mind. In the financial crisis I see coming, the right ideas might mean your life.”
From that newsletter I would like to share some points from both Doug and Steve.
First Doug:
1.      “First, recognize that wealth is a high moral good.
Don’t feel guilty about having it or about wanting more. I do believe that productive people – people who work hard to provide goods and services for others – definitely tend to be wealthier than unproductive people. They deserve to be. And since we don’t live in a malevolent universe, people generally get what they deserve. So, yes, wealth is definitely one indicator of moral excellence.”
2.      “Second, figure out your purpose in having money.
Sure, money makes life easier. And it’s nice how it enables you to assist people you like with material things. But I strongly suggest that you not take too short a view on this matter.”
3.      Steve Sjuggerud enumerates Doug’s 3-step plan to building wealth. As the focus of this blog is wealth and Network Marketing, please pay special attention to these three steps and see if what I have boldfaced below doesn’t make the case for Network Marketing.
“Step 1: Liquidate. Chances are high that you have too much “stuff.” That stuff is costing you money in storage cost, in depreciation and in the weight of psychological baggage. It’s weighing you down. Get rid of it.
“Step 2: Consolidate. Take stock of your assets. After Step 1, that should be a lot easier.
“Your main asset is knowledge, skills and connections you possess. Take stock of them. What do you know? What can you do? Whom do you know? Make lists and think about these things, with an eye to maximizing their value.
“Step3 is the most important… the ability to create. Working for yourself is the easiest way to create.
“Think like an entrepreneur at all times. Remember that there is an infinite desire for goods and services on the part of the 6 billion other people on the planet. Find out how you can give them what they want, and the money will roll in.”
If you are thinking of getting started in a home-based business but don’t know what to do first, download this free report and start creating some wealth.
MLM Special Knowledge
“. . . Initiations often double as a long and confused moment of shared truths. Essentially, what the adults, elders, or senior members of the group share with the initiates is the knowledge they possess, and then they admit to a terrible secret, the secret of the “tribe” – that beyond the knowledge the initiates have just been given there is no special knowledge.”                                           Anna Simons, The Company They Keep
There is no special knowledge. Anywhere. Not in the US Army Special Forces which is what Anna Simons is writing about in the above quote.
Not in an ashram or a monastery. Not in a lodge or a brotherhood or a cult or a club.
Not even in a Multi-Level Marketing company is there secret knowledge other than that shared when entering the group. Though initiates want it, (see http://liveyourdream-ownyourlife.com/bullscript) suspect it has always existed and believe they will now have it revealed upon joining, there is no secret knowledge about how to lock down that success that’s been so elusive yet so promised.
There’s only this:
To persistently work the system of a 5 Pillar company.
MLM Ignorance Is Not Bliss, It’s Suicide
The poet Thomas Gray wrote in an Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College (1742): “Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.”
It is obvious that Mr. Gray was not in an MLM company. Not knowing what you, as a network marketer, have to do or what your company requires you to do is sheer folly. Nothing to be desired at all Mr. Gray.
Nothing is more disheartening than to hear the horror stories of people earnestly working hard at building their businesses only to have them and their paychecks yanked out from under them.
And all done ‘legally’ according to the company’s Policy & Procedure or P&P.
I frequently hold training presentations where I speak about the Five Pillars essential to any successful and thriving Network Marketing business. What follows is a typical exchange with a participant:
“Oh well my company’s OK. It fits the 5 pillars pretty well.”
Me: “Great. So you’ve read your P&P.”
“Well, no I haven’t.”
Me: “Excuse me then, but how do you know it has the 5 pillars essential to your success?”
“Well the people are just great.”
Me: “And I’m sure they are. But it’s not the people who own the company or who made the rules. Or who will pay you. Or not.”
Silence.
Me: “I know why you don’t want to look. I’ve been there. It’s because if there is something you don’t like, you’ll have to admit it, you know ‘let in’ the idea, that you have been taken, that you have made a mistake. That you’re not as smart and pretty or handsome and business savvy as you think you are. So you’d rather look away. IGNORE what might be holding you back, IGNORE what’s keeping you from all that freedom, from all that money and time freedom you’re dreaming of and they promised you.
“Essentially you’d rather NOT know than know, isn’t that it? You’d rather ignore the 800 lb. gorilla even as it is sitting on your chest and picking your pocket as it’s eating your lunch.”
Belief is a double-edged sword, cutting both ways. Belief, as has been shown by science, is a necessary component of human survival. However, when the object of belief is injurious to life, health and wealth, belief can be suicidal.
What makes looking at their company’s P&P so painful for most people is the threat to their self image, to the idea that have leapt into a chasm without the slightest thought of looking first.
I know because I did exactly that not once, BUT THREE TIMES. And my friends tell me I’m bright, and intelligent!
I don’t say that for any other reason than to let you know
INTELLIGENCE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.
The major stumbling block, the #1 obstacle to people gaining the success they dream of is IGNORANCE.
Ignorance of what the company expects of you; Ignorance of the ownership’s background and business history; Ignorance of what you must do to gain a check and how large your organization has to be for you to be able to retire at age 65 or 25 – if the company will ever let you do it at all; Ignorance of how to generate your own leads; Ignorance of how to train a downline; Ignorance of just what to do next.
And the only way to dispel Ignorance is to LOOK and then LEARN, acquire the skills necessary for this particular profession you have chosen.
You can begin with this free report to dispel the Ignorance that is holding you down, back and away from living your dream and owning your life.
PS: See why most network marketers don’t think the ‘bad stuff’ will ever apply to them. (It has to do with staying small and out of sight.)
Money And Relationships In MLM
Putting the money before the relationship in an MLM business is the same as putting the cart before the animal.
Gives new meaning to ass backwards, doesn’t it?
Appreciating Self-Worth Is The Beginning Of Progress or Using Mental, Spiritual, Intellectual and Creative Power to Do All We Could Ever Dream Of Doing
I am a big fan of personal development and deeply appreciate using mental, spiritual, intellectual and creative power to do all we could ever dream of doing in our desire for a successful Network Marketing career.  Coming from a lifetime as an employee and experienced in the conventional business model, I needed a drastic “attitude adjustment” and I got it from all the wonderful material out there.
Here is a quote from one of the masters, the late Jim Rohn, who in his book The Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle had this to say:
What would happen if we all put our minds to work and read the books, took the classes and discovered new ways to refine our philosophy? What would happen if we all developed a new attitude about the past, the present and the future? What would happen if we all changed our feelings about one another and the importance of each individual to our collective destiny? If we did all that, just imagine what an incredible effect this would have on our future?
The exciting thing is that each of us already has enough mental, spiritual, intellectual and creative power to do all that we could ever dream of doing.
Everyone has it!
{Let me repeat that: The exciting thing is that each of us already has enough mental, spiritual, intellectual and creative power to do all that we could ever dream of doing.}
We just need to become more aware of all that we already have and spend more time refining all that we already are, and then put it to work for us.
What stops us from recognizing our inherent gifts and talents is a poor attitude about ourselves. Why are we so quick to see the value in others and yet so reluctant to see it in ourselves? Why are we always ready to applaud someone else’s accomplishment and yet so shy about recognizing our own?
The bracketed and boldfaced text above is my doing.
Now what about your doing? If you have been working on yourself but still are stuck you may benefit greatly from this free report.
Playing The Time Leverage Game
Funny how each of us really has the same dream: time, money, great relationships, and a meaningful, fulfilling life. But none of us will ever achieve our dream by trading time for money in a job.
There is only one way and that is to learn to Leverage Our Time; make Time and Others work for us.
Here are the Rules as outlined in a great, short, impactful book by Bill Quain Overcoming Time Poverty: How To Achieve more By Working Less.
1. Learn To Multiply. Time for Money is linear and to increase the money you have to increase the Time. It is simple addition. Instead learn to Multiply, using the Time of Others whom you have taught and mentored and the Time of the Others whom they have found in turn. And so on and so on.
2. Increase the value of your time, don’t increase your time. When you create more without working more, you have automatically made your time more valuable.
3. Use your time to Build not Buy. Build equity that will work for you forever. Don’t spend money on things but on more income-producing assets.
4. Build a Toll Booth, not a Toil Booth. Be more interested in collecting than working. Find a massive and dynamic trend and take part in it.  Even just a small part of each transaction will accumulate quickly.
5. Get a Mentor, be a Mentor. In this Time Leverage Game, build a network of winners. We all need help and it is our responsibility to pass on that help to those who earnestly seek it.
Intention and Attention IS the Secret
There is NO secret to The Secret. It is constantly working for you NOW and has been since you were born. There is NOTHING mysterious about it. The movie just served to bring it to a greater number of peoples’ Attention.
It works like this: First is your Intention. Whatever is in your Mind CONSTANTLY will be created or manifested. So if you hold in your Mind the debt on your credit card, you will have debt on your credit card just as you will have more health if that is what you hold in your Mind. It is incredibly simple!
Consequently the first step is coming to real-ize what it is You INTEND to create.
Second is your Attention. Whatever is being held in your Mind is what you are Attending to. In essence you are welcoming it, making a place for it to ‘Enter and make Itself comfortable’.  It is that simple.
So you have a choice: Let Others’ thoughts come and go at THEIR behest or You welcoming thoughts and their resulting manifestation by holding in your Mind Your thoughts at YOUR behest.
The Key to the Secrets is You entertaining the thoughts that match your conscious Desire and then letting your Subconscious get to work.
Control your thoughts or someone else will.
Attention & Your Attitude
I have posted before from the brilliant Randy Gage.
Here is his contribution today. http://www.networkmarketingtimes.com/blog/your-attitude/#more-1152
“Here’s the funny thing.  The one thing we have the most control over is our attitude.  Yet most people behave like they have no control over this whatsoever.
But your attitude determines how you respond when someone turns you down, doesn’t show up for a presentation, or a team member drops out.  You can choose to make those learning experiences or distractions.
Your attitude determines whether you accept personal responsibility for what happens in your business, or you blame others.  Your attitude determines whether you do daily self-development or not, exercise or not, try or give up.   In fact, your attitude actually determines whether you decide to succeed or fail.”
May I add, so does forgiveness. In fact, forgiveness IS attitude, all about attitude, your attitude.
So if your relationships are not what you’d like, and I am including business relationships in that bunch, if conversations with loved ones and prospects aren’t as smooth as you’d like, may I suggest paying more Attention and perhaps you’ll see that Forgiveness is exactly what’s needed in the moment.
If you are looking for an aid to work on your ability to forgive, may I further suggest this audio CD – THE CHOICE OF FORGIVENESS.
Here’s a link to Amazon and no, I am not an affiliate.
