Lack of MLM Skills Is Only Part of the Problem

Those who have been mentored by Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter know that people fail in MLM because they lack the necessary skills. But I believe that’s only the beginning.

What if a network marketer buys and studies all the CDs and books and attends all the seminars and workshops –in other words, has all the skills – but still struggles and fails because THE SKILLS ARE NOT PUT TO USE.

Doesn’t that beg the question that there must be more going on than lack of skills?

Don’t we have to ask WHY that network marketer is not using the skills?

And what’s gotten into his mind that’s distracted him or confused and deterred her?

The percentage of network marketers who ARE making their goals won’t give this much thought unless they first have downline members who fit this description of struggle and second, care about those struggling.

The percentage of network marketers who are making their goals ARE most likely using the required skills and so are making Big Al’s point.

Unfortunately the vast majority in MLM is not and so is struggling and thus contributing to the common perception that MLM doesn’t work – to say the most harmless thing about it.

That’s why I wrote my book. I took six stories of six different people that I had a series of phone conversations with over the course of several weeks. They each swore they wanted to succeed but allowed outside people, forces and ideas to derail them. In the book I told their stories and then suggested what those ideas and forces might be and why so many, some say as high as 98%, fail.

I wrote this book to shed some light on a problem that is largely self-imposed and so is largely self-correctable, provided the will is there.

Why 98% Fail or No Success Without Failure

I know, I know! That’s focusing on the negative, like saying the “Glass is Half-Empty!”

Well, it is. It has to be in order for the Glass to be Half-Full, doesn’t it?

Let’s be honest. When you look at that Glass, it’s BOTH Half-Empty AND Half-Full AT THE SAME TIME.

All the conventional advice is for us to focus on Success, on the part of the Glass with the liquid. And when we do that we are choosing to ignore the empty half.

But it is still there  – the empty half I mean.

There can be no Full without Empty, just as there is no Success without Failure.

Besides, that’s where we learn.

You remember the story of Edison and his 10,000 ‘failures’. Only he didn’t call them that. He claimed he learned 10,000 ways the light bulb wouldn’t work!

So yes, looking at failure works. It teaches. In our case it teaches what NOT to do with our Network Marketing businesses.

If you’re up to it and want to learn what NOT to do, you may want to check out my new book available only at Amazon via the Kindle store. If you don’t have a Kindle reader, don’t worry. You can get the free reader app download for any of your devices here.

And you can get your copy of the book via http://Why98PercentFail.com.

Thanks.

To Your Success!

“If you got a business, you didn’t build that. You got help.”
~ President Obama, July 13, 2012 Roanoke, VA

So the President credits the government for any successes.
Does Mr. Obama blame the government when businesses fail too?

It is a fair question, isn’t it?

MLM Motivation: Why I Do This

Here’s one reason I do MLM – Time Freedom:

Being in business for myself allows me the time to take my 90-year old dad to Old Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium.

And yes, he REALLY did see Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig play!

I mean there I was just a few hours ago unaware of an entire blog and a group of outstanding and outrageous people. By way of an email I discovered Adam Baker and his most impressive and inspiring site:

ManVsDebt.com where I also found a video of  him speaking at a TED event. His topic? Asking this enormously important and timely question:

What does Freedom mean to you?

I can’t recommend it highly enough so here it is. Don’t delay, check this out now:

MLM: Just Another Part of the Ride

About 7 years ago when I first heard Personal Development and the idea that our thoughts create reality connected with Network Marketing, I was incredulous. I found it hard to believe that what I thought and believed had anything to do with my business success.

Let’s face it, how many car salespeople or brokers concern themselves with such things? I was starting a networking business and needed to do the things necessary to build it. What was all this New Age stuff to do with that?

Well, maybe those salespeople and brokers should pay attention, because now I know that seven years ago my education in my innate powers was just beginning.

The very last part of the video presentation below ends with these words:

“The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it you think it’s real because that’s how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round and it has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly colored and it’s very loud. And it’s fun for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, “Is this real or is this just a ride?’ and other people have remembered and they come back to us and they say, ‘Hey, Don’t worry, don’t be afraid ever because . . . this is just a ride.'”

MLM or network marketing is just an attraction, another ride at the amusement park.

Don’t be afraid to let out a good scream!

9 Reasons Why MLM STILL Appeals To Millions

In a blog article I recently read the author, J.P. Hicks, was consoling those who are experiencing the humiliation of being unemployed and the frustration of looking for a job in the current dismal economic environment.

He related a story of his cousin who has a $180K college education, is working part-time in a department store and has sent out over a two year span 38,000 resumes, all to no avail.

Insightfully, he stated that society has “trained us to believe we are worthless without a job” and that “no one ever tells us to stop looking for a job and get busy building something”.

    Not true.

Over my years in Network Marketing I have heard exactly that advice repeatedly. Hicks lists 10 reasons why ‘JOB’ should be a curse in our collective vocabulary and that we should shun all attempts at seeking one. Out of the ten reasons, nine could precisely describe the motivation for the millions who join the NM industry. Mind you, the author was not endorsing Network Marketing.

Here are those nine reasons that very accurately define why MLM still appeals to millions and most likely will for a great long time:
    1. Working a job makes others wealthy, but not YOU. Self-explanatory.

2 Jobs are designed to make you poorer. Because wages do not keep pace with rising costs. In MLM you are paid according to what your efforts produce.

    3. Jobs force you to get up at the same time every day: One of the goals of many Network Marketers is simply to sleep until they are finished and then get up.

    4. Most jobs require you to wear a costume of some kind  Wish I knew how many MLMers brag about going to the “office” in their pajamas!

    5. Bosses wield the all  power. This one hit home for me because I have never met a boss I ever liked!

    6. Jobs tax your income at the highest rate. If you’ve never heard about the tax breaks for owning your own business, talk to your accountant. And if you don’t have one, find one because you’ll need one and will be able to afford one once the ball gets rolling.

    7. Jobs steal your passion from you and deny you of  what you really want to do with your life. Another one of the greatest motivations for a vast majority of MLMers.

8 You’ll never be in control of your life working for someone else: If someone has the power to end your way of life, then you will never be free. Who can’t get jacked up and enthused about owning their own life?

    9. Most jobs hold back your potential as a human being: Ah, this one explains all that personal development that is so intimately connected to Network Marketing. What other business or industry allows you to get to the heart of the matter for yourself and touch and mentor others to grab hold of their own life course?

    Many thanks to:

“Why do I have to learn that?”: an MLM Tip from Big Al . . .

    “Give me a break . . .

“So I was giving the “Skills Test” to a potential leader. He couldn’t answer a single one of the 10 skills needed to get a new distributor started. Ouch. “When I asked him if he was going to learn how to do this business, he said,

“Why do I have to learn that? I have a good attitude and I have goals. That’s all I should need. I don’t want to bother learning how to do this business.”

“Well, it is hard to learn to spell if you refuse to learn the alphabet.

** If you can’t share with your new distributor four or five great opening sentences that get prospects to beg you for a presentation, what chance does your new distributor have to get presentations?

** If you can’t write down word-for-word exactly what to say to get an instant appointment, should you let your distributor just make something up and hope for the best?

** If you don’t tell your new distributor the three real reasons people join, will he leave those reasons out of his presentation?

** If you don’t show your new distributor the two ways of creating “instant vision” – how will your new distributor keep his team motivated?

** If you don’t give your new distributor three or four great, rejection-free closing sentences, won’t your new distributor be afraid of closing?

** If you don’t teach your new distributor the “needs vs. wants” principle, won’t your new distributor get discouraged quickly?

** If you don’t teach your new distributor the exact words to say to take control of the prospect’s mind to get his total attention, won’t the message go unheard?

“So if you are a new distributor reading this newsletter, go to your upline’s training and learn these skills. Don’t make excuses. Don’t blame the weather, say you are too tired, that you are busy petting the stray cat you just bought … just go to your upline’s training sessions and learn. “And if you are a leader reading this newsletter, give your new distributors the skills they need right away. Don’t let them struggle. Write down exactly word-for-word what your new distributors should say and do. “Anyone can do this business easily if they just say the right words and do the right things.”

    How to Fix YOUR Economy

Let’s be honest for a moment.

Your economy begins in YOUR home, regardless of what they are doing in Washington. Regardless of the outcome of the election this November.

I mean historically, does the government instill confidence in you to fix the economy? Or to fix ANYTHING?

Let the Dimwits and the Repulsives squabble over THE economy. We, you and I, should be concerned with OUR OWN economies respectively. Because we know what we can do.

The simplest and least costly way to get a handle on this is to get paid for something you are already doing. In fact, it is something you’ve been doing since you were 5 or 6 years old.

    What’s that?

    Recommending.

Referring people to products or services that you use and enjoy and feel good about.

As I said you did it when you loved a new breakfast cereal and a new TV serial. You do it when you find a great restaurant and when you come across a magical, awesome, fabulous book or movie.

You just never got paid for doing it before.

    Want to change that?

    Check out this brief video.

Have a question? Email me. tony@ajlauria.com

You can also get a copy of a blueprint that lays out what this is all about, what to look for and what to avoid. There’s no cost for the download.
